• About The Chequers Inn •

The earliest reference to building on this site is 1591, when George Marples and his family resided here. It was one of George’s children, Jacob, who we believe opened and alehouse here.

The present Inn was built in 1735 by Thomas Marples, but it wasn’t until the late 18th Century that the Inn became of some prominence. It was during this period that the body snatchers from nearby Eyam would call here for a flaggon of ale as they made their way to carry out these macabre deeds in the graveyards of Sheffield!

Nowadays, The Chequers is a bustling stylish pub with rooms offering fabulous food and drink.

Owned by Jonathan & Joanne Tindall since 2002, The Chequers is ideally positioned to explore the fabulous Peak District by car, on foot, or by cycle. We have a dog friendly area adjacent to the bar and of course well behaved dogs are welcome in the garden, but no dogs in the main bar area please.

We look forward to welcoming you.
